How do I access the internet from University Housing (Ethernet)?

Residence Halls are wired with high-speed connections to the University network and the Internet. Each room is equipped with voice and data connections. For an Internet Connection, you will need:

  • A computer capable of networking. Typically any computer purchased new that was configured at the factory (such as a Dell or a Gateway or an Apple, etc.) since 2004 will have this capability. If you have an older machine, that will still work, but verify that your computer can use TCP/IP networking, can connect to a DHCP server, and that it has a properly-installed ethernet (10BaseT or better) adapter. If you have difficulty, you can take advantage of the ACNS computer repair center for assistance with machine setup and configuration.
  • An Ethernet cable. Called "Cat5" or "RJ45", this type of cord is required. Note that a telephone cord will not work.
  • An activated line. To activate your data line, you need to complete the "Housing Internet Connection Request Form" at http://www.housing.colostate.edu/tech/request.html. These forms will also be available at the front desk of each residence hall. After your jack is activated, upon connecting your configured computer in your room, you will automatically be connected to the network.
  • A computer set up to use the campus network, and set up with "Clean Access." To configure your computer to communicate over the internet, see one of the "Setting up Ethernet" Self-Help Guides on the ACNS website. For assistance with "Clean Access," see the "when you arrive" section of the CSU Housing & Dining website, at https://wsprod.colostate.edu/cwis10/hds/tech/arrive.htm. up
